May I ask why you don't recommend using a program like this for transfer? Canon ZoomBrowser is marvelous the way it auto transfers images, and gives me lots of control. Simply insert your SD card into the SD card reader slot, click the folder at the bottom of your screen in the taskbar, open up your memory card and open it's DCIM folder. Is this preferable to getting a portable hard drive? No special software, no paying extra for anything, no loading your laptop with things you won't use (if you are going to actually use things like DPP or Faststone - which I do - that's another matter, but I still wouldn't use them to transfer). I know, sounds complicated, but I know you've been doing something similar anytime you've ever copied/or moved a file on any computer - it's essentially the same steps - I just spelled it out. And in a couple of minutes your images are copied into the folder you choose. In the DCIM folder select all the images, then click on one and drag them to the destination folder.

Right click on the folder you want these images to go into and choose open in new window. Windows Explorer, (if you open up your Documents or Pictures folder you are in windows explorer) is all that is needed. Nor will it be required in the future either.

No software is required or has been required on any PC going back as far as Win 95 as far as I can tell. Now more to your point about transferring photos.

I just got a new laptop too and I picked up a Lenovo Slim DVD Burner DB65 from Amazon for less than $30. I have no dvd drive, so can't install ZoomBrowser from the Canon site.
